The intricacies of the U.S. electoral system are famously historically grown and internationally unique. After all, winning the popular vote does not necessarily mean winning the election. Some states are considered “battlegrounds”, while others are rarely mentioned in discussions of policy and topics that might swing the neck-to-neck race for the presidency. Additionally, the president and vice-president are not the only position up in the air this November – most Americans will cast their vote for many down-ballot positions, as well.
Bruce Stokes, Visiting Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, will provide insight into the real political impact of districting practices, the role of the Electoral College and other peculiarities that might just be the tipping point in this year’s election. The consequences of this decision, which could potentially be in the hands of only a few thousand swing voters, will resonate around the world.
Neele Eilers is a Research Fellow at dpart.org and was responsible for a research project on political attitudes of European publics ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections. She looks at inequalities, transformations of pluralistic societies and anti-democratic attidudes.
