Death Register Steglitz-Zehlendorf

Grabstein

Are you dealing with the arrangements for a recent death?

Once you have learnt of the death, you should contact a funeral director of your choice immediately. They will organise the funeral for you and can also help you with all the formalities, if you wish.

Notification of death

Notifications of death can be sent by post to our Registry Office or placed in our in-house letterbox. You will then receive the burial authorisation and death certificates by post. Please enclose stamped and addressed return envelopes for the dispatch of the burial authorisation and death certificates. The fees are payable by bank transfer.

A post box is available for funeral directors who frequently report deaths to us. If you are interested in this, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What documents are required for certification?

  • The death certificate issued by the doctor
  • Written notification of death
  • If the deceased was unmarried, their birth certificate, available from the birth registry office
  • If the deceased was married, a marriage certificate is required. If this does not contain the register data of the birth, a birth certificate must also be submitted.
  • If the deceased was widowed, proof of the death of the spouse is also required. If the death has not yet been entered in the marriage register, a death certificate for the spouse is required, which can be obtained from the registry office in whose jurisdiction the spouse died
  • If the deceased was divorced, the final divorce certificate is also required.
  • If the deceased was not a German citizen, proof of citizenship (e.g. passport) is required. Foreign documents must be presented in the original with a translation by a sworn interpreter.
If the deceased was married, the registry office will issue a certificate of death for the state pension fund free of charge.
