Poniatowa, the Polish twin city of the Berlin District of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, declares itself an “LGBT-free zone”
The Berlin District Office of Steglitz-Zehlendorf has recently learned that the district’s twin town Poniatowa declared itself an LGBT- (lesbian-, gay-, bisexual-, transgender-) free zone on 30 August 2019. Many twin cities of Polish towns and municipalities that have declared themselves anti-LGBT are discussing the implications of these declarations. The Berlin District of Steglitz-Zehlendorf stands for a free civil society where freedom of speech and fundamental civil liberties are indispensable, regardless of sexual orientation. We have made it clear to our twin town that tolerance and equality are the main pillars of democracy and that our District Office very much deplores the stand being adopted by Poniatowa. The European Parliament condemns Poland for its LGBT-free zones and urges Polish authorities to condemn this action and withdraw all resolutions attacking LGBT rights. The Berlin District of Steglitz Zehlendorf fully endorses this declaration issued by the EU on 18 December 2019.
The Berlin District of Steglitz-Zehlendorf wishes to make it very clear that it distances itself from the decision taken by the City Council of Poniatowa on 30 August 2019 because it considers this decision to be incompatible with the joint spirit of our twinning agreement.
The Mayor of the Berlin District of Steglitz-Zehlendorf Cerstin Richter-Kotowski said:
bq. Town twinning thrives on the lively exchange that connects people across borders. Such exchange is based on social diversity and the inclusion of everyone.
All the staff of the District Office of Steglitz-Zehlendorf has signed the letter to be sent to the Mayor of Poniatowa.
