Am 17. Juni 1953 gehen im Osten Deutschlands über eine Millionen Menschen auf die Straße. Aus einem sozialen Arbeiterprotest wird ein Volksaufstand, der die gesamte DDR erfasst. Einzig das Eingreifen sowjetischer Panzer sichert an diesem Tag die kommunistische Diktatur in der DDR. Ein erinnerungswürdiges Datum der deutschen Demokratiegeschichte. Es führt uns die Macht und Ohnmacht der Menschen vor Augen. Zugleich erinnert das Datum an die Bedeutung demokratischer Werte.

On June 17, 1953, more than a million people took to the streets in eastern Germany. A social workers’ protest turns into a popular uprising that sweeps the entire GDR. Only the intervention of Soviet tanks secures the communist dictatorship in the GDR on this day. A date worth remembering in the history of German democracy. It brings home to us the power and powerlessness of the people. At the same time, the date reminds us of the importance of democratic values.
