A location for research, development, production

Berlin’s southwest around the Dahlem science campus has been an exciting and future-oriented place for more than 100 years. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has developed into a centre of science and research of diverse disciplines and a broad spectrum of scientific activities, and it continues to be purposefully expanded. Today, this area is one of the largest science locations in Germany. A high research density with close networks and diverse collaborations between companies and the Free University of Berlin as well as numerous science institutions in the district create an ideal place for start-ups and spin-offs. Also, many family and traditional companies have emerged around the science location.

Near the Free University of Berlin, a Business- and Innovation Centre (FUBIC) will be erected with the support of the Senate Administration for Economics, Energy and Business to benefit even more from the location’s great scientific potentials for economic development and creating qualified jobs. For this purpose, a former hospital building is going to be cored and enlarged. From 2022, it will be available as a start-up centre for start-ups with focus on the health and IT industries. The FUBIC project will be financed with funds from the GRW [Joint Task: Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure] and own funds of the operator WISTA Management GmbH. All in all, about 85 companies providing 1000 jobs will be expected to settle on the entire 5-hectare FUBIC campus.

Around the start-up centre (FUBIC) six office and laboratory buildings will be erected on a private basis in which established innovative companies can be settled in the respective segments. Diverse synergies can be expected between the participants due to the proximity to science, start-ups and established companies. In the medium run, these positive approaches will also have a positive effect on the structures in the neighboring 85-hectare industrial and commercial area around Goerzallee. Low-value productions will be substituted by innovative technologies, new start-ups and new technology companies. Thus, the future-oriented Berlin SOUTHWEST is gradually expanding beyond the science campus Dahlem towards the industrial and business park Goerzallee. Business 4.0 with its smart city projects will be a new focus of the future-oriented Berlin SOUTHWEST in Goerzallee.

A regional SOUTHWEST management, supported by the Senate Administration for Economics, Energy and Business, is working for the location. It creates re-use and settlement concepts and takes care of the location marketing, also in regard to culture and tourism.
