Once numbered among Berlin’s largest industrial regions and a centre for electrical industries (Elektropolis), Schöneweide is now part of the new axis of growth in the city’s south east. With over 1,300 companies and a range of scientific facilities and institutions, this growth area stretches from the international airport at Berlin-Schönefeld through Adlershof and Tempelhof to the city centre. Schöneweide Science and Technology Park covers approximately 80 hectares, providing a laboratory and show window for smart urban development projects and new production technologies. Numerous high-growth companies in the technological and creative industries have already set up in the vicinity of the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW), Berlin’s largest University of Applied Sciences. Schöneweide is also home to the Spreeknie TGS Technology and Start-up Centre (TGS). With 24,000 m² of space, TGS offers sufficient room both for the Business Incubation Centre as well as degree programmes focused on entrepreneurship. This location also has the particular feature of well-developed residential and supply structures. Around 27,000 people live in Oberschöneweide, primarily on former working-class estates which have been extensively refurbishment over the last years. Growing numbers of businesses are considering relocation to Schöneweide, attracted by the mix of a reputed university, active creative scene and urban quality.
The Wuhlheide Innovation Park is also nearby, the first Technology and Business Incubation Centre set up in the former East Germany after the fall of the Wall. Today, the Incubation Centre there is home to over 190 businesses profiting from this creative environment of product development and innovation. The Wuhlheide Innovation Park, which covers a total of 32 hectares, is owned by the federal state of Berlin. The plots on the site, developed with GRW regional development funds, are offered either as freehold or on a long-term lease. The Business Incubation Centre also rents office and laboratory space at attractive conditions.
