Science at Work – An innovative science and technology powerhouse in Berlin’s south-east
Since 1991, Adlershof has developed into a high-tech and business location which covers 4.2 square kilometres. This science, business and media park, the largest in Berlin and Brandenburg, is home to approximately 1,000 companies, 16 scientific institutions, two business incubation centres, and a total of around 16,000 employees and over 6,000 students. In the post-1945 period, this site – once the first airfield for powered flight in Germany – was developed into East Germany’s leading research centre. Today, Adlershof Technology Park is not just one of Berlin’s well-established Zukunftsorte, but a leading science park both in Germany and Europe.
Adlershof is an ideal location for research and technology, and still has potential for further growth. Funding provided by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises has played a significant role in the site’s successful development. At present, the development of the site’s infrastructure has been supported by a total investment of over half a billion euros (EUR 540 million) from the GRW fund to improve regional economic structures.
To further promote the networking of business, science and research in Adlershof, the Senate Department has initiated a variety of projects including the Centre for Photovoltaics and Renewable Energies, opened in late 2013, which was financed with EUR 25 million of GRW funding. The use of GRW funds to develop other industrial sites between the Groß-Berliner-Damm and the Schöneweide railway depot and prepare the land for building is also aimed at making the Adlershof location even more attractive.
WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, as a federal state of Berlin holding company, works with its subsidiary, the limited company Adlershof Projekt GmbH, to organise the further development of the Adlershof location. Their portfolio of tasks includes real estate marketing, supporting start-ups, networking science, technology and business, and national and international cooperation. The technology and business incubation centres are operated by the WISTA subsidiary IZBM.
