European elections determine who will serve in the European Parliament. Members of the European Parliament are always elected for five years. In the next legislative period, the European Parliament will have 720 members – 15 more than after the last election in 2019.
The European Parliament is the legislative and supervisory body of the European Union (EU) and is the only EU body whose members are elected directly by EU citizens. It was founded in 1958. In 2024, the citizens of the European Union will elect the European Parliament for the tenth time.
The European elections take place in all EU countries. The EU currently has 27 Member States with a total of 448.4 million citizens. The EU Member States’ representatives specified that the European elections would take place between 6 and 9 June 2024. Subsequently, on 26 July 2023, the federal government set Sunday, 9 June 2024, as the date for the European elections in Germany.
The last European elections took place in May 2019.
