Last year, 14,782 people were hurt in road accidents in Berlin - the lowest figure in 30 years, according to police data.
Similar to the first year of the pandemic, the shutdown of public life was reflected in road accident statistics in 2021. Accident numbers continued to be well below pre-pandemic levels, the police reported on Monday (Feb. 21, 2022). From 2019 to 2020, the number of accidents decreased by 14 percent, while the number of accidents in 2021 (127 626) remained almost constant compared to 2020.
40 people died in traffic accidents in 2021 - fewer than in 2020 (50) but more than in 2017 (36). What is striking, according to police, is how many "vulnerable" road users were among the fatalities: 14 pedestrians and 10 cyclists Children were not among the fatalities. Meanwhile, tThe causes of road accidents have not changed, with mistakes made while turning at the top of the list. After that, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, and driving under the influence of were the most frequent causes. Parking violations became more frequent in 2021 compared to the previous year: 81,169 vehicles were towed away, almost 25,000 more than in 2020.
562 illegal car races were reported in 2021, a number which, according to the police, clearly shows the success of police work in this area of crime. In addition to the city's motorways, the most popular routes for speeders were Kurfürstendamm and Straße des 17. Juni. 236 of these recorded races were escapes from police controls. 7731 mobile speed controls were in operation, which recorded 569,816 speeding offences over the year.
