S-Bahn: Extension of the Siemensbahn to Hakenfelde feasible

Feasibility study for three route variants

This conclusion is the result of a technical feasibility study by the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB). The study includes three route variants with stops in Gartenfeld, Water City Oberhavel and in Hakenfelde. Possible options include elevated tracks, sections in troughs, and tunnels.

The variants with tunnels are probably associated with high costs, the VBB announced. Further planning should also include considerations of a tram connection between the former Berlin Tegel (TXL) airport and Spandau cit hall. "This will allow for a balanced consideration with regard to the means of transport to be implemented," the VBB explained.

Siemensbahn to be reactivated after 40 years

The state of Berlin wants to reactivate the Siemensbahn railroad in the northwest of the city after more than 40 years of inactivity. The process has been accelerated by Siemens' announcement that the company will invest up to 600 million euros in its site on the railroad line by 2030. Plans include a campus for research, production and housing. The most recent target was for trains to be operational in the first construction sector by 2029. The feasibility study now presented concerns for the second section, which would have to be rebuilt.
