Hakenfelde is bordered to the south and southwest by Radelandstrasse, Hohenzollernring and Neuendorfer Strasse as far as the Schultheiß quarter, while the eastern border is formed by the Havel River (including Eiswerder). In the north and west is the border with Brandenburg. Hakenfelde has a wide variety of buildings: To the west of Streitstraße and Niederneuendorfer Allee there are detached single-family and terraced houses, a high-rise housing estate on Hakenfelder Straße and magnificent old town villas near Schönwalder Allee.
Hakenfelde
The Spandauer Forst makes up the largest part of Hakenfelde. The rest of the Spandau district is dominated by small settlements, detached houses and apartment buildings.
Spandauer Forst
Two thirds of Hakenfelde is covered by the Spandauer Forst. The large forest area is a popular recreational area with walking and cycling paths. The Berlin Wall Trail also passes through it. Eiskeller is located at the north-western tip of the forest. The settlement is considered the coldest place in Berlin in winter - ice from Lake Falkenhagen used to be stored here and sold on to hospitals and breweries. Another special feature is the game reserve at the Evangelisches Johannisstift.
Hakenfelde forest estate
In the north-east of Spandau Forest lies the Bürgerablage bathing establishment in the immediate vicinity of the former site of the Berlin Wall. Not only is the sandy beach well frequented in summer, but also the beer garden in the old hunting lodge. The forest settlement of Hakenfelde also juts into the forest. The settlement was built in 1914 as a garden city and today its core is protected as a historic monument. In addition to terraced houses, there are also many detached houses in the Waldsiedlung. The gardens are well-tended, the streets tree-lined.
Wasserstadt Spandau
The new development area "Wasserstadt Spandau" north of Spandau's old town has been under construction since 1996 on the west and east banks of the Havel. The various neighbourhoods, some of which are still under construction, include not only residential space but also commercial areas, green spaces and social infrastructure. The residential buildings are partly multi-storey, partly in Dutch style, and partly built with natural materials. Many of the houses are located on the waterfront.
Quartier Schultheiss abd Quartier Havelspitze
The Schultheiss quarter is located in the southernmost tip of Hakenfelde. Here there is a newly designed waterfront promenade on the former harbour quay. The quarter was the first to be completed. For the residential buildings, the historic features were taken up and historic buildings were partially incorporated. The Havelspitze quarter is located on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Spandau and Maselake Bay. The residential buildings, up to seven storeys high, are very densely built; the Spandauer Seebrücke with the residential complex at the Wasserbogen forms the northern end. A town square has been created in the centre of the neighbourhood. The listed Poelzighalle from 1929 has been preserved.
Quartier Nordhafen
In the Nordhafen quarter, townhouses have been built with large roof terraces, direct access to the water and, in some cases, moorings for boats. The Hohenzollernpark with its playground and meadows on the western bank of the Nordhafen is still very young. Maselakepark ends at the Havel with a promenade that is also part of the Havel cycle path. The neighbourhood takes its name from the Nordhafen Spandau. The historic boathouse from the early 20th century points to the past of the former inland harbour, which lies on a 500-metre-long branch canal of the Havel.
