Gatow is a village inside the big city. Open fields, many single-family houses with gardens, and only a few apartment buildings characterize the neighborhood.
Gatow
Gatow offers quiet, upscale living in the southwest of Berlin. The heathland Gatower Heide, the Windmühlenberg nature reserve, and the banks of the Havel Rive offer plenty of nature and recreational value.
Villa Lemm
Villa Lemm in the north of the Gatow suburb is considered one of the most beautiful estates in Berlin. The neo-Renaissance style garden of the 6-acre property extends all the way to the Havel River. The villa-like country house itself was occupied by the British city commander after the war. Queen Elizabeth II was a regular guest. Today, Villa Lemm is privately owned and not open to the public.
Nature and Recreation: Appelwiese and Gatower Heide
The Appelwiese, located in the immediate vicinity, is one of three Havel bathing meadows. The large sunbathing lawn (Große Badewiese) in Hohengatow and the smaller one (Kleine Badewiese) near the old village centre used to be among the most important bathing spots in all of Berlin. The adjacent irrigation fields, which in earlier times were used for sewage disposal, have today developed into a heatland under nature conservation: the Gatower Heide.
Alt-Gatow, Hohengatow, and Habichtswald Housing Estate
The neighborhood Alt-Gatow is located around the old village center and features old manor buildings, a windmill, and historic residential buildings. The neighborhood Hohengatow in the south of Gatow near the Havel River is characterized by mansion-like detached houses with large gardens and dense old trees. The Habichtswald housing estate is located in the west of the neighborhood near the former Gatow airfield. It consists of single-family houses that are idyllically situated in the middle of the heathlands of Gatower Heide.
Housing Estates Fliegerhorst and Havelblick, and Windmühlenberg
In the immediate vicinity is the Fliegerhorst housing estate (Fliegerhorstsiedlung), which was built in 1935 for Luftwaffe pilots. It consist of 30 white single-storey houses with pointed roofs and round arched doors around a horseshoe-shaped street. To its northeast lies the Havelblick housing estate, located on the former irrigation fields at the level of the harbor. There are several water sports clubs in the vicinity. The Windmühlenberg housing estates is a new single-family housing estate near the village center.
Nature Reserve and Golf Course
The recreational value in Gatow is high. In addition to the bathing meadows on the Havel and the Gatow heathland, the Windmühlenberg nature reserve with its rare dry grassland flora and lovingly laid-out walking paths is also worth a visit. The windmill on Buchwaldzeile is still quite new: it was inaugurated in 2008. In addition, a golf course was built in Gatow in the late 1960s. The Groß Glienicke Lake with its bathing area and boat mooring in the neighboring Kladow is also popular with Gatow residents.
