Neukölln's Schillerkiez borders Berlin's largest park. It is also popular for its beautiful old flats and the variety of restaurants.

Schillerkiez is a Wilhelminian-style neighbourhood that is considered quiet and is in high demand. Its manageable size, relaxed atmosphere, close proximity to Tempelhofer Feld and the large number of cafés, bars and restaurants attract flat hunters, tourists and flâneurs alike.

Location of the Schillerkiez in Neukölln

The Schillerkiez is located in Berlin-Neukölln and borders Tempelhofer Feld on its western side. To the north, the neighborhood is bordered by Columbiadamm. Hermannstraße forms the end of the Schillerkiez to the east and Leinestraße to the south. The heart of the Kiez is the tree-lined, park-like Schillerpromenade with Herrfurthplatz.

Living and going out in the Schillerkiez

The Gründerzeit district with its beautiful old buildings with wooden floors, stucco and high ceilings was once built as a residential neighborhood for the better-off. On Oderstraße there are several houses built in the 1920s with former workers' flats. Since the closure of Tempelhof Airport and the associated elimination of aircraft noise, peace has returned to the Kiez. The demand for rental flats and residential property is increasing, as are the prices.

There are comparatively many creative people, expats and young families among the residents. They can go out on their own doorstep. They can choose between restaurants serving different cuisines, dumplings, pizza and falafel. Many options are vegetarian or vegan. There are chic bars and corner pubs serving beer, craft beer, whiskey and cocktails. Cafés ranging from cosy to very hip invite you to take a culinary break during the day.

Shopping in Hermannstraße

If you cook for yourself, you can fall back on the offers of a supermarket and a discounter. Spätis and bakers can help with thirst, bread cravings and other culinary needs. The Schiller market, a weekly market for fresh fruit and vegetables, delicatessen and cut flowers, is also held every Wednesday and Saturday at the Genezarathkirche. If you can't find what you need, walk on to the lively Hermannstraße. There is not only an organic supermarket and other grocery shops, but also bistros, small shops and various service providers. The good infrastructure for families also includes daycare centers, schools and playgrounds in Schillerkiez.

Urban greenery and places of interest

The Schillerpromenade, which runs roughly north-south through the centre of the neighborhood and is lined with old plane trees, is a mini oasis between the - albeit magnificently designed - canyons of houses. Park benches invite you to linger and take a deep breath. The grassy areas and cobbled streets create an almost village-like flair and park atmosphere, especially in the summer months. The inner courtyards of the houses are sometimes narrow and sometimes very large, but in almost all cases they are planted with old trees.

The extensive Tempelhofer Feld is not only a popular leisure area for local residents, but also for Berliners from other neighborhoods and tourists. Stressed city dwellers can find peace and quiet in the churchyards to the south and south-east of the neighborhood. To the north is the Volkspark Hasenheide. The landmark of the Schillerkiez is the Genezareth Church on the circular Herrfurthplatz. The former Königlich Preußische Baugewerkschule, a massive brick building at the end of Schillerpromenade from the early 20th century, is also striking.

Night-time peace also applies in the Schillerkiez

Whether at Tempelhofer Feld, in front of the bar or on the terrace in front of the restaurant: In the Schillerkiez, as in the rest of Berlin, please be considerate of local residents after 10 pm and adjust your noise level accordingly.
