Crellekiez

Fete de la Musique

A group from the CRAS association in Crellestraße in Berlin-Schöneberg as part of the Fete de la Musique.

In addition to its weekly market, the Crellekiez neighbourhood in Schöneberg is also known for its pretty old buildings and good infrastructure.

The Crellekiez is less well known than the other Schöneberg neighborhoods - Akazienkiez and Nollendorfkiez, for example - but it is certainly worth a visit. It is not only beautiful, but also has a lot to offer for a good life in the city.

Location of the Crellekiez in Schöneberg

The Crellekiez takes its name from Crellestraße. It runs close to the railway line (Nordsüd-S-Bahn) designed by mathematician and engineer August Leopold Crelle. Crellestraße itself is a cobbled street lined with residential buildings with a few small shops, restaurants and service providers on the ground floors. The Crellekiez has no fixed boundaries.

Living in the Crellekiez

The flats in the Crellekiez are in high demand. Many of the old buildings still have floorboards or parquet flooring and some even have stucco, while the new buildings have floor-to-ceiling windows and underfloor heating. Most people in the Crellekiez live in rented accommodation. However, more and more owner-occupied flats are being added. The pretty flats are just one of the reasons why demand for housing in the Kiez is increasing. The neighborhood is pretty and has a good infrastructure. Restaurants, cafés, shops, pubs and playgrounds are well frequented. Couples, singles, families, creative types, senior citizens and students have found their home here and feel at home.

Weekly Market and Crelleplatz

The Crellekiez is known for its weekly market. It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday on a square at the north-eastern end of Crellestraße and in Crellestraße itself and mainly offers fruit and vegetables. Baked goods, meat, fish, herbs and spices, Turkish and Arabic specialities are also available. Towards the south-west is the car-free Crelleplatz. While the parents sit and chat in the street café, the children play by the fountain or in the playground. Trees and houses provide shade, while cobblestones and children's laughter create a cosy atmosphere.

Urban Greenery and Parks Nearby

The Crellekiez is green where there are street or courtyard trees and on the strip between Crellestraße and the railway. But you don't have to walk far to the nearest park. The Heinrich-von-Kleist-Park and the Kurt-Hiller-Park, for example, are within walking distance. The Old St Matthew's Churchyard with the graves of Rio Reiser and the Brothers Grimm, Max Bruch and Rudolf Virchow is also nearby. The Flaschenhalspark and the Park am Gleisdreieck are just a few more steps away.

Night-Time Peace also Applies in the Crellekiez

Whether it's a restaurant, bar or evening stroll: In Crellekiez, as in the rest of Berlin, please be considerate of local residents after 10 pm and adjust your noise level accordingly.
