Akazienkiez

Akazienstraße in Berlin-Schöneberg

Schöneberg's Akazienkiez neighborhood is lively and popular thanks to its many cafés, restaurants and small shops. But it is not painfully hip.

The Akazienkiez neighborhood has a great mix. Young families, creative people, newcomers and long-time residents meet in cafés, restaurants and small shops, at markets, at festivals and under large street trees. Life here is varied and relaxed - so it's no wonder that the Kiez also attracts people who don't live there but want to stop off for a few hours, relax or shop.

Location of the Akazienkiez in Schöneberg

The Akazienkiez neighborhood is located in the heart of Schöneberg, between Hauptstraße, Grunewaldstraße and Martin-Luther-Straße. The center is the eponymous Akazienstraße. It takes its name from a small acacia grove. The trees were once located where the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche stands today. The Schöneberg village church and some old houses in the main street on the section between Grunewaldstraße and Dominicusstraße bear witness to the time when Schöneberg was still a farming village.

Schöneberg - Rund um den Winterfeldtplatz

Living and Going Out in the Akazienkiez

The Akazienkiez has two neighborhood centres. The area around Goltzstraße and Winterfeldtplatz, where a large market takes place every Saturday, has many cafés, restaurants and a few bars. Some artisans have their shops here, and other small shops are being added. The Akazienstraße / Belziger Straße area is similarly lively. The cafés are full and the people are relaxed. The rest of the Kiez is mainly residential - in a mixture of magnificent Wilhelminian style architecture and unadorned post-war West Berlin charm. One of the most famous residents of Akazienkiez has been honoured with a memorial plaque: David Bowie lived with Iggy Pop in a shared flat on Hauptstraße.

Schöneberg Pumpkin Festival and Primavera Spring Festival

The Akazienkiez is also known beyond the neighborhood boundaries for the festivals that are celebrated there. The Schöneberg Pumpkin Festival in Akazienstraße and Belziger Straße is now a traditional part of the cultural calendar. The pumpkins end up in soups, quiches and lasagna. There is also a marketplace and entertainment for young and old. The Primavera spring and asparagus festival also takes place in the Akazienkiez and attracts visitors from many other parts of Berlin.

The Akazienkiez is quite green. Heinrich-Lassen-Park with its fairytale-themed playground is the largest green space in the neighborhood. The Wartburgplatz and the area around the Apostel-Paulus-Kirche, where exhibitions and concerts are held in addition to church services, are also ideal for relaxing and taking a break from playing. The Protestant cemetery Alt-Schöneberg is also popular for taking a deep breath. The Heinrich-von-Kleist-Park with the Königskolonnaden and the Rudolph-Wilde-Park, which merges into the Volkspark Wilmersdorf, are very close to the Akazienkiez. Other attractions in the neighborhood itself are the Kachelhaus on Goltzstraße and the Kulturhaus Schöneberg.
