Neighborhoods
Where is the Kaskelkiez? Why is the Graefekiez so popular? Which neighborhoods are great for families? A brief portrait of the most important "Kieze" in Berlin. more
The Winsviertel, sometimes also called Winskiez, is located in Prenzlauer Berg. To the north are Wilhelminian-style buildings, while the south is dominated by large panel system-buildings.
The Winsviertel with its beautiful old buildings, narrow streets, good infrastructure and connections is a highly sought-after Kiez in Berlin. What its residents still appreciate: The relative peace and quiet and the good mix.
The Winsviertel takes its name from Winsstraße. Its namesake, Thomas Wins, was - with interruptions - mayor of Berlin from 1426 to 1448. Prenzlauer Allee, Danziger Straße, Greifswalder Straße and Mollstraße form the boundaries of the Winsviertel neighborhood. The Kollwitzkiez adjoins the Winsviertel to the west and the Bötzowviertel to the east.
The Winsviertel can be divided into two parts. The south-eastern part consists of prefabricated buildings. The part north-east of Heinrich-Roller-Straße is a Gründerzeit neighborhood. The old building fabric has largely been preserved there. Gaps in the building stock caused by air raids during the Second World War have of course long since been closed. Today, new housing is only very rarely built. Stadtplatz Marie is relatively centrally located. The area on Marienburger Straße with its adventure playground, play fountain, sunbathing lawns and a few trees is a popular meeting place, especially for families in the Kiez.
The Winsviertel is considered a comparatively quiet neighborhood with a good mix - both in terms of people and the range of small shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés. Second-hand clothing, home accessories, party supplies, dried flowers, books, handmade ice cream, Italian pizza, empanadas and sushi: there is a lot to discover in the Winsviertel. If you can't find what you're looking for, you'll find it in the neighboring districts or at Alexanderplatz, which adjoins the Winsviertel to the south.
In addition to the Stadtplatz Marie town square, the Winsviertel is particularly green in the south-west - in the form of cemeteries and the Leise-Park, which was also used as a cemetery in the past. Many families are out and about in the natural, wild and romantic park. Nevertheless, there are always quiet spots to be found. The special flair of the park, in addition to the partly untamed nature, is created by the gravestones, which were deliberately left standing at the time. The park is accessed via a barrier-free circular path and other paths lined with trees and lawns. The cemeteries, which are still in use, are separated by a fence. They belong to the St Marien parish, Nicolai parish and St Georgen parish and are popular with stressed city dwellers for a quiet stroll.
