CASTLE AND CITADEL - History that lives in stories - in the Commander's House
Next to the ticket office in the gatehouse is the entrance to the upper floor into the exhibition. It is the
ideal starting point for any exploration of the citadel, also because at the end of the exhibition you can
reach the Julius Tower.
- In the representative rooms of the Commandant's House you can discover the history of the castle and
fortress. There are models, maps and plans, paintings and photographs, archaeoarcheological findings,
tin figure dioramas, weapons and helmets. Everyday objects from the times of occupation can tell stories
of historical events.

STADTGESCHICHTLICHES MUSEUM - Exciting Spandau - in the Zeughaus
On the first floor you get an overview of the history of Spandau.
- More than 300 objects tell of the settlement and development of the Havel city, which has only been part
of Berlin since 1920. Representative of the industry that was based here in the 1920s is a roadworthy
Hudson Essex and a collection of historic Siemens small electrical appliances. Film props from the
studios in Eiswerder with film clips in the "cinema" are also very popular.
On the upper floor are special exhibitions, with a historical backround.
- A branch of the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum is also located in the Gothic House
in the old town of SpandauStr. 32. 13597 Berlin (free admission - see also gotischeshaus.de).
There are also art exhibitions an in December a Christmasmarket.

UNVEILED. Berlin and its monuments - in the Proviant Magazine.
- The cultural-historical permanent exhibition in the Proviantmagazin shows monuments from 1849 to 1986,
with which the respective state power shaped the Berlin cityscape. Due to political upheavals in the 20th
century, monuments were repeatedly removed from public spaces.
- The museum offers the opportunity to get acquainted with the great symbols of the German Empire, the
Weimar Republic, National Socialism and the GDR. Monuments that should be buried and forgotten can
even be touched, which is normally not possible in museums.

EXERCISE HALL - testimonies of the military history - historical cannons and pomp guns
- The former drill hall house exhibits historical cannons, among others ceremonial guns from the 16th
century. The collection of weapons also reminds us that Spandau was considered Prussia's armory from
the 18th century onward.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL WINDOW - Interesting insights into the past
- Learn about the early history of the citadel. In the west kurtine there are two fascinating
excavation findings to visit. It is an excavation field with the remains of a
Slavic settlement with a wooden earthen wall, the later stone castle wall and the castle
complex from the Renaissance period.
- On the other side there are medieval Jewish gravestones, which were probably taken
from a Jewish cemetery in Spandau in the 15th century and used for the construction of the castle.
An audio installation reveals the meaning of the inscriptions in Hebrew as well as in German and
English translation.

S C H A U D E P O T - BASTION QUEEN
Until 29.09.2024 you can visit so-called “toxic” monuments in the Schaudepot and watch a film by
Nnenna Onuoha “The Memory Guardians” (from 11.08.2024).

In addition, there are special exhibitions with historical and/or artistic references, including in the
BASTION KRONPRINZ, among others.

The citadel is located in a nature reserve, so you can always spot animals
such as raccoon, fox and various species of birds and insects.

Please refer to our website for more up-to-date information www.zitadelle-berlin.de/en
So you will not miss any of the numerous, mostly free, events both in the historical and artistic field
(curatorial, and special tours, round table discussions ...).

Public guided tours cost 4,50 € p. P. - every 1st Sunday of the month is an open english guided tour.

Events of other providers have separate prices and the
