The Most Beautiful Picnic Spots in Berlin

Picnic

The arrival of warmer weather signals the official start of the picnic season in Berlin. You don't have to search long for a suitable place - after all, the German capital is one of the greenest cities in the world.

Basically every Berlin park or garden has lotzs of inviting spaces where you can settle down with a blanket, basket and some tasty goodies. Since there are almost countless green spaces and picnic opportunities in Berlin, here are some classic and special tips. But even beyond the places in this list, there are numerous smaller and larger green spaces in Berlin that are ideal for a delicious picnic, some of which might even be waiting next to your own front door.

The Classics

The Special Ones

Preußenpark

Lovers of authentic Asian food should schedule a trip to Preußenpark in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. Quickly renamed "Thaipark", Thai and Filipino families come here sell home-cooked specialties on weekends. Leave your picnic basket at home and taste the diverse cuisine of Thailand in Preußenpark.

Tempelhofer Feld

Admittedly, Tempelhofer Feld, a vast airfield which was converted into a park after the airport was closed, has long since ceased to be a secret picnic spot. Nevertheless, the unsurpassed expanse of the grounds remains unparalleled in Berlin and the old airport hangars serve as an extraordinary backdrop for a picnic.

Insel der Jugend

The Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth) actually belongs to zum Treptower Park, but this mini-island is a special place thanks to its location in the middle of the Spree river. Accessible only via a bridge, you can picnic here at a sheltered spot surrounded by nature and water.

Viktoriapark

The Viktoriapark is located on the Kreuzberg hill in the dsitrict of the same name. At the uppermost poin, a man-made waterfall springs and plunges all the way to the foot of the hill. The atmosphere here is unique in Berlin and makes a nice change from a "normal" picnic in the park.

Peacock Island

Peackock Island is a bit further out than most other spots on this list, but therefore not as crowded as some parks in Berlin. The palace, the ancient oaks and the many peacocks roaming free on the island make a picnic seem almost like a fairy tale.

Park am Gleisdreieck

For decades, the space between the railroad tracks was nothing more than an unused urban wasteland. Now the area at Gleisdreieck between Yorckbrücke, Möckernstraße and Tempelhofer Ufer has become a new 86-acre park. Its central, extensive lawn and meadow areas, which are lined by small woods and individual trees, make for an ideal picnic spot in the heart of Berlin.

The Insider Tips

Körnerpark

This park is located in the heart of Neukölln and is anything but typical for Berlin - in the best sense of the word. With its fountains, manicured lawns and shady trees, Körnerpark offers a little escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the big city. Every Sunday evening in the summer, free concerts take place here. The café in Körnerpark also offers picnic baskets.

Volkspark Blankenfelde

The extensive botanical park in Blankenfelde is under monumental protection. Picturesque greenhouses, old trees, forests and meadows, a spacious game preserve and numerous small bodies of water attract visitors to the north of Berlin.

Sand Pit in Grunewald Forest

We know that Berlin has a lot to offer - but a sand dune in the forest? The sandy areas in Grunewald date back to the Ice Age. Raw material mining created the huge sand pit, which today invites many children to romp around and play. A visit to this area needs to be planned: The nearest train station (S-Bahnhof Grunewald) is about a 15-minute walk away. However, those who take the trip out to the far west of Berlin will be rewarded with an exceptional picnic area.
