After being closed for almost a month, the Tiergartentunnel in the direction of Kreuzberg has been reopened for cars up to 3.5 tons.
However, the underpass remains closed to buses and trucks, according to the Senate Department for Transport. "The reason: the fans still available are not sufficient to remove the smoke in the event of a fire involving one or more trucks," it said.
Due to problems with the ventilation systems, the Tiergarten Tunnel was completely closed to traffic in a southerly direction at the beginning of November. Due to excessive vibration levels and material damage, several fans were dismantled, which meant that the fire ventilation concept no longer worked for all traffic.
For this reason, the tunnel in the southbound direction will remain closed to HGV traffic until further notice. Once the appropriate traffic signs have been installed, the tunnel will be reopened to other traffic. It remains to be seen when trucks and buses will also be allowed to drive again.
