Bluetongue has reached Berlin

Bluetongue has reached Berlin. According to the Senate Department for Justice and Consumer Protection, a small flock of sheep in the district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf is affected.

The virus with serotype 3 (BTV-3) has been spreading from the Netherlands since September 2023.

Bluetongue virus is transmitted by certain mosquitoes

Bluetongue disease affects cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas and various zoo animals and, according to the Standing Veterinary Vaccination Commission (Stiko Vet), causes considerable animal suffering and major economic damage. It is transmitted by the bluetongue virus via certain mosquitoes. As the weather is mild and insects continue to fly, owners should keep a close eye on their animals, the Senate Administration recommended. The disease is not dangerous for humans and it is also safe to consume meat and dairy products.

Animals can be protected by vaccination

According to the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), only sheep usually show severe symptoms such as increased body temperature, apathy and separation from the flock. The reddened mucous membranes of the mouth swell, there is increased salivation and foaming at the mouth. The eponymous discolouration of the tongue is very rare. Animals can be protected from severe symptoms with a vaccination. This is strongly recommended by Stiko Vet and the FLI.
