Monsters on Berlin's streets: Campaign for more safety

The Berlin Senate is using monster motifs to promote more composure and less aggression in road traffic.

The motifs of the new campaign show colourful and hairy plush monsters that embody agitated or reckless drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The slogans are: "Don't let yourself get mad", "Don't crack up" and "Get out of surf mode". The last motif refers to pedestrians who only look at their mobile phones.

More consideration, more composure and more attention

It is about more consideration, more composure and more attention, said Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) at the launch. "Far too often we react irrationally in road traffic and turn ourselves - figuratively speaking - into real traffic monsters. This leads to more conflicts and more accidents. Our behaviour should be characterised by appreciation and respect. If we show consideration for each other, everyone benefits in the end."

Road users perceive themselves as considerate

A recent survey shows the discrepancy: according to the survey, 89 per cent of respondents in Berlin consider themselves to be very considerate. However, only 37 per cent rate other road users as considerate. 56 per cent of Berliners would regularly experience arguments or verbal abuse in road traffic. "As a result, one in four people do not feel safe on Berlin's roads."
