The Berlin Marathon this weekend brings with it numerous traffic restrictions.
The actual marathon will take place on Sunday, with races over shorter distances taking place on Saturday. The first roads in Mitte have been closed since last Friday.
Straße des 17. Juni has been closed between Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße and Brandenburger Tor since Friday. Ebertstraße between Behrenstraße and Scheidemannstraße, the whole of Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße, 17 June up to the Victory Column, John-Foster-Dulles-Allee, Scheidemannstraße, Dorotheenstraße and the government district will be successively closed until the weekend. On Saturday, there will be traffic closures around Potsdamer Platz and Zoo Berlin from 5am. On Sunday, the route will be closed from 5 am until probably 5.30 pm. The closures will be gradually removed after the runners have passed through.
On Saturday, motorists can use the Tiergartentunnel to avoid the closures. On Sunday, the route can be crossed via the A100 city ring road, the Tiergartentunnel and the Alexanderplatz tunnel. Road users must expect traffic jams and restrictions. Cyclists and pedestrians can use the subways at the underground stations and the designated areas to cross the route.
According to BVG, buses and trams on around 40 lines will have to temporarily change their routes due to road closures. ‘Passengers should inform themselves in advance,’ said BVG. In the route planner on BVG.de and in the FahrInfo app, all changes will be taken into account by the race weekend at the latest.
For participants in the marathon, their race number or participation card will also be valid as a ticket for travelling to and from the course on buses and trains on race day. The many volunteers will also be able to travel free of charge on the Berlin public transport system on Sunday on presentation of their entry email.
