Müggelsee is suitable for swimming again

Baden im Müggelsee wieder ohne Bedenken möglich

People can go swimming once again in Berlin's Müggelsee without any worries.

Due to problems with E. coli bacteria, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) issued a warning last week and advised against swimming. “Current tests on the bathing water quality at Strandbad Müggelsee have shown that the water is once again suitable for bathing,” the office has now announced.

Poor water quality at several bathing areas

According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the bacteria are found in the intestines of humans and animals and enter bodies of water with faecally contaminated wastewater. Detection indicates faecal contamination of the water. The high summer temperatures continue to lead to problems with algae in numerous bodies of water, according to the Lageso. The water quality of the Dahme is impaired in the areas of Schmöckwitz, Große Krampe and Bammelecke. The same applies to the Lower Havel in the areas of Grunewaldturm, Kleine Badewiese, Breitehorn, Lieper Bucht, Radfahrerwiese, Großes Fenster, Strandbad Wannsee and Alter Hof.

Warning of murky water

The state office warned against swimming in murky water and recommended that children in particular avoid areas with green and blue-green streaks. Sensitive people could otherwise experience skin irritation and allergic reactions.
