At its meeting on Tuesday, the Berlin Senate recognised the "exceptional significance" of the Olympic Park sites in terms of urban policy.

This was announced by the Senator for Urban Development and Building, Christian Gaebler (SPD). With this decision, the responsibility for drawing up and establishing development plans for this area lies with his Senate Department.

Planning control of technical requirements

According to the Senate administration, Tuesday's decision is intended to enable the technical requirements from the fields of sport, nature conservation, landscape conservation and monument protection, among others, to be managed in planning. However, this does not mean that the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district will not be involved in the planning process in future.

Site to be developed step by step

According to Gaebler, this major urban planning project, which has been underway for many years, is to be planned from a single source under the leadership of the Senate. The aim is to gradually develop the 130-hectare site with its outstanding historical significance. According to Gaebler, there is no current reason for the Senate's decision on Tuesday - not even a direct discussion about Berlin's bid to co-host the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games. However, such considerations are part of the overall planning. There is also no direct link to a possible new stadium for Bundesliga football club Hertha BSC. These questions are being dealt with by an expert commission, which is part of the sports administration.
