The largest open space in the city is to become more attractive: More play facilities, seating areas and more are planned for Tempelhofer Feld.
The state-owned company Grün Berlin wants to make Tempelhofer Feld in the Oderstraße area more attractive with new exercise and recreational facilities as well as larger entrances. According to a spokeswoman, there will be more opportunities for children in particular, some of which will also be barrier-free: Plans include a bouncy disc, a turning circle, a climbing arch, stepping platforms, a water spray system as well as a wheelchair carousel and a wheelchair trampoline.
In addition, 25 benches, including two new wooden benches with a total seating area of 84 metres, two new drinking fountains and two new toilet facilities will make a visit to the former airport site more attractive. With 176 new parking spaces for bicycles, including four for cargo bikes, cyclists will have significantly more secure parking options in future. Speed bumps and road markings are intended to slow down cycle traffic and ensure greater safety for all visitors in the entrance areas.
The main entrances at Herrfurthstraße and Crashgate are to be widened by ten metres to a total of 21.5 metres and 24 metres respectively. "In addition, the side entrances on Kienitzer Straße, Allerstraße, Okerstraße and Leinestraße will each be widened to four metres," explains the Grün-Berlin spokesperson. All six entrances will be designed to be barrier-free, including a guidance system for the blind. The Leinestraße entrance will also have a new turnstile. This will allow visitors to leave the site even after opening hours, as is already the case at the Tempelhofer Damm, Columbiadamm, Herrfurthstraße and Crashgate entrances.
In addition, underground pipes for electricity and water for the existing buildings, project areas and leisure facilities in the project area will be newly laid or renovated. The entire remodelling is scheduled for completion next year.
