Last year, more funding than ever before was disbursed in Berlin from the federal-state programme to improve regional economic structures.

As Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey (SPD) reported on Tuesday, 251 million euros were channelled into 286 projects. Compared to 2022, this is an increase of around 35 million euros.

50 per cent of the funds from the federal government

The joint task "Improvement of the regional economic structure" (GRW) is enshrined in the Basic Law as an instrument of regional development. The aim of the federal and state funding programme, from which Berlin has benefited since 1991, is to create equal living conditions. 50 per cent of the funds are financed by the federal government.

Funding for numerous projects

According to Giffey, funding was provided in 2023, for example, for the construction of the Berlin BioCube, a start-up centre in Buch. The Marzahn transport hub and the zoo have also benefited from the programme. Numerous companies were also among the recipients of funding from the programme, for example for relocating or expanding their production. Funding projects this year include the construction of the new Elsenbrücke bridge, the S-Bahn Museum and the Wuhlheide Innovation Park.
