The Senate Department for Transport and the Environment has given a positive interim assessment of the climate-friendly public park bathrooms project.

To this end, two dozen so-called dry toilets were set up in April and May across all of Berlin's districts. They are intended to increase the number of available public bathrooms in places without connections to water and electricity, the Senate Department announced on Friday. "Half of the test phase has now passed and the interim balance is positive." The public restrooms from the pilot project have been used more than 400,000 times.

As part of the project phase, users can rate the cleanliness and facilities of the public bathrooms online. Around 2000 people made use of this opportunity. There has been particularly positive feedback about the urinals, which can be used by both men and women, the Senate Department announced. Public bathrooms are an important part of public services, said Senator for the Environment Manja Schreiner (CDU). She was pleased to be able to show through the pilot project that it is possible to offer public lavatories even in places where it is not possible to provide conventional toilets.

Use of the public bathrooms is free of charge. According to the information provided, the aim of the project is to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable public bathroom infrastructure in public spaces. During the one-year test phase, users can evaluate the two different toilet models. The aim is to draw conclusions for future planning.
