Passengers in Berlin can now take the M10 tram line all the way to Moabit.
After about two years of construction, the new section between the main station and the Turmstraße underground station was opened on Saturday, according to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB). It is 2.2 kilometres long and, according to BVG forecasts, will be used by more than 10,000 people per day in the future. Five new stops were built, all of which are barrier-free. The tram will run every five to ten minutes. According to the information, the last time a tram ran through Moabit was about 60 years ago.
Transport Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU) said: "In just over two years of construction, we have brought the tramway a little further west and thus reached another milestone in the expansion of sustainable mobility in Berlin." The extension of the M10 line will provide passengers with a new east-west connection without changing trains. The line, which starts at Warschauer Straße and runs via stops at Frankfurter Tor, Eberswalder Straße and Nordbahnhof, among others, previously ended at the main station. From now on, it will continue its tour westwards via the new stops Lesser-Ury-Weg, Alt-Moabit/Rathenower Straße, Kriminalgericht Moabit and Lübecker Straße to the stop Turmstraße. According to BVG, the investment costs for the construction of the new line were around 33 million euros.
