Blue-green algae: Water quality compromised at several swimming areas

Due to the continued development of algae masses, water quality is currently compromised at five Berlin swimming areas.

According to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso), swimmings should now also avoid the swimming area Breitenhorn on the Lower Havel as well as the swimming areas Lieper Bucht, Grunewaldturm, Kleine Badewiese in Spandau and Schmöckwitz, for which warnings had already been given previously. Children in particular should not swim in turbid waters with greatly reduced visibility depth and areas with visible green or blue-green streaks.

Skin irritation and allergic reactions possible

According to the Lageso, sensitive persons in particular have to expect skin irritations and allergic reactions when swimming in polluted waters. With high algae concentrations, an increased concentration of blue-green algae and blue-green algae toxins must be expected. The Lageso recommends taking off swimming clothes immediately after swimming, showering off if possible and drying off vigorously with a hand towel.
