Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) has promised Ukraine straightforward aid for injured soldiers.
"Soldiers are cared for in Berlin hospitals and do not have to bear the costs for this. These are borne by the social welfare offices," Wegner announced on Saturday. Why this had not happened in individual cases in the past was being investigated by the competent supervisory authority, according to the Senate Chancellery. Earlier, RBB had reported.
Wegner was responding to a request from the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitaly Klitschko. Klitschko had written a letter to the governing mayor asking for more help. RBB had quoted from it. According to the letter, more than 60 injured soldiers have been treated in the Bundeswehr hospital in Berlin since 2014. In the meantime, up to 500 wounded Ukrainian soldiers per month can be expected. According to that, the mayor of Kiev hopes that at least some of them will be treated in Berlin.
According to the Senate Chancellery, Wegner wants to get in touch with Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD): "Further forms of support and medical care will be discussed by the Governing Mayor with the Federal Minister of Defence shortly," it said.
