Berlin's CDU state chairman Kai Wegner is to be elected as the new governing mayor in the state parliament on April 27.

This was announced by SPD state leader Franziska Giffey on Monday at the presentation of the coalition agreement for a new black-red state government. First, SPD members must vote on the contract. The result will be announced on April 23, Giffey said. The following day, the CDU will decide on it at a state party conference.

If both sides agree, the signing of the coalition agreement is planned for Wednesday, April 26. At the plenary session in the House of Representatives the following day, the new governing mayor is to be elected. Wegner would be the first CDU member in this office since 2001 - and Giffey's successor in the Red City Hall.
