Charlottenstraße is a new bicycle lane

New bicycle lane in Berlin-Mitte

Parking spaces for bicycles and scooters are in the new bicycle lane in Charlottenstraße.

Part of Charlottenstraße, which runs parallel to Friedrichstraße, is now a bicycle lane. This applies to the section between Leipziger Straße and Unter den Linden.

"The road is part of the bicycle priority network, which we are working on at full speed," said Berlin's transport senator Bettina Jarasch (Greens) on Monday. Traffic for cars, motorbikes and trucks is now only free for residents there. In addition, cyclists set the speed limit: They are allowed to use the entire lane width and ride side by side, cars have to adapt. The maximum speed is 30 kilometres per hour.

The six-month conversion of Charlottenstraße in Berlin-Mitte thus follows the Radverkehrsplan adopted by the Senate in November last year, which aims to promote cycling in Berlin. "It is important that we can open this cycle lane because the cycle lane on Friedrichstraße has been removed. Now cyclists have an alternative on this north-south route, which is of central importance," said Jarasch.
