Berlin announces transitional solution for local transport ticket

S-Bahn Berlin

Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey has held out the prospect of a temporary regional successor to the 9-euro ticket.

"We are working on a good bridging solution in Berlin from October to December 2022 until the nationwide ticket comes," the SPD state chairwoman tweeted on Tuesday.

Berlin monthly ticket for 29 euros under consideration

The 9-euro ticket was available for three months until the end of August. The federal government coalition has agreed on a successor as part of the third relief package. The local transport ticket, which is valid throughout Germany, is to be available for a price of 49 to 69 euros per month. Giffey advocated two ticket variants: "For a good follow-up solution to the 9-euro ticket, there should be a two-tier ticket system: 29 euros for a regional offer in the respective federal state and 49 euros for a nationwide ticket."

Jarasch pleads for tiered system

Berlin's transport senator Bettina Jarasch also pleaded on Monday for a two-track approach to the successor to the 9-euro ticket. "A 69-euro ticket alone would do little for Berlin, because many subscriptions are already cheaper here," the Green Party politician said. "I think a tiered system is good, as the Green Party had already suggested in the federal government: i.e. a regional ticket for 29 euros in the VBB area - and additionally a nationwide 69-euro ticket."
