Berlin's Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey has promoted apprenticeships in the crafts.

Out of a total of 15,000 apprenticeship places in Berlin, more than 7,000 are still vacant this summer, especially in the crafts, said the SPD politician on Tuesday during a visit to the Fachgemeinschaft Bau training centre in Marienfelde. She said that the crafts deserve more attention when it comes to choosing a profession. Now was the right time to decide in favour of it.

"Huge demand for craftsman services"

Economics Senator Stephan Schwarz (non-party) also pointed to the job prospects: "If you look at the next few years in perspective, we will always have a huge demand for craftsmen's services," he said. Craft professions are absolutely crisis-proof, he said. "That was not always the case. We also had a lot of unemployed craftsmen in the 80s. But that will not happen in the next few years."
