After the war began in Ukraine, many people in Berlin also helped and took in refugee families.
The head of the government Franziska Giffey (SPD) had invited to the "opportunity market". Sigrid Nikutta, former head of BVG and now head of freight transport at Deutsche Bahn, was also there.
After the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, Berlin had become a transit hub for refugees. Giffey had said on Tuesday that more than 234,000 people from Ukraine had arrived in the German capital so far. However, this number is not the same as those who have stayed in Berlin. The Senate assumes that the Ukrainian community has grown by around 100,000 people.
Helpers were able to exchange ideas and get information at stands in the Red City Hall on Sunday. "There is a need for exchange on personal challenges," the Senate Chancellery had announced in advance. "And time and again, it's also about what happens after arrival, what prospects refugees have in our society - how they find work, a place to live or a school place for their children."
