Olympic Stadium to generate electricity with own photovoltaic system

Neue Photovoltaikanlage Olympiastadion Berlin

Workers assemble the solar modules of a new photovoltaic system on the roof of the Olympic Stadium.

The ventilation, cooling and lighting of Berlin's Olympic Stadium will in the future be powered by the stadium's own electricity generation.

Photovoltaic system to generate 615,000 kWh of electricity per year

After the installation of a 605.25 kilowatt peak photovoltaic system on the outer concrete ring of the stadium roof, a total of 1614 photovoltaic modules will supply almost 615,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity requirements of around 205 three-person households, as the Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH announced on Friday (Jan. 21, 2022).

New plant saves around 225 tons of CO² per year

According to the statement, the new system will generate around eleven percent of the local electricity requirements and will save around 225 tons of CO² per year. The degree of self-sufficiency will even be increased in the medium term. The use of battery storage with second-life batteries could further promote independence from the public power grid. Instead of feeding surplus electricity into the public grid when the sun is shining strongly, the local electricity storage units will be used, which can then release the stored electricity after sunset for a certain period of time.
