Berlin's Senator for Urban Mobility, Bettina Jarasch (Green Party), is advocating for a 30 km/h speed limit.
According to a report in the Tagesspiegel, Jarasch is considering a Senate proposal to join a corresponding initiative of the Association of German Cities. "As a municipality, we need more creative freedom from the federal government when it comes to creating new 30 km/h speed zones," Jarasch told the newspaper. "Therefore, I can't imagine anyone in the Senate being against joining the initiative."
The initiative presented by the Association of German Cities in July urges the federal government to create the legal conditions for local authorities to be able to impose a 30 km/h speed limit in urban areas where they consider it necessary. This issue is currently the subject of much debate. For a model project, the Senate had set up 30 km/h zones on five main roads in the city - as the state government reported, four of these roads had better air quality as a result.
