  • "Hundegarten Moabit" in Berlin

Two dogs only have eyes for the ball in the "Moabit dog garden" in Fritz-Schloss-Park. Dogs can let off steam in the area, children and people can learn how to handle dogs and dog owners and non-dog owners can chat.

The Stephankiez is a Wilhelminian-style neighborhood in the north-east of Moabit. In the center is Stephanplatz with a playground, benches and Café Achteck. Where the Kiez ends is controversial.

Chic old buildings, tall street trees, old cobbled streets: The Stephankiez is a little more quiet than the lively south of Moabit.

Location of the Stephankiez in Moabit

The Stephankiez neighborhood extends around Stephanplatz in Berlin-Moabit. It belongs to the old district of Tiergarten and today's administrative district of Mitte. The Kiez is named after Heinrich von Stephan, who was, among other things, Director General of the Post Office and Royal Prussian Minister of State. The boundaries of the neighborhood are not entirely clear. It certainly includes the triangle between Stromstraße, Quitzowstraße and Perleberger Straße. Others also include the area west of Putlitzstraße and the industrial estate on Ellen-Epstein-Straße. Sometimes even Lehrter Straße with Poststadion and Fritz-Schloß-Park are considered part of the Stephankiez.

Living in Wilhelminian style buildings

Most of the houses in the Stephankiez were built between 1870 and 1910. The buildings, some of which have spacious layouts, high ceilings, stucco façades and interlocking courtyards, are well preserved - and in high demand. Not only tenants are interested in the flats, but also financially strong buyers and investors. The rest of the building stock is made up of large housing estates from the 1960s to 1980s and some new-build projects with owner-occupied flats.

Going out in the Stephankiez

In recent years, more and more families, creative types and students - the Technical University Berlin is not far away - have found their way to the Stephankiez. They join the long-established residents who have enjoyed living in here for a long time. The Stephankiez is not a neighborhood for going out, but there are a few shops, late-night eateries, snack bars and cafés. Many residents go shopping in the nearby Turmstraße. There is a much wider range of shops there.

Urban greenery and places of interest

Depending on your opinion, the beautiful Fritz-Schloß-Park at the Poststadion is either part of the Stephankiez or "just" nearby. In the park there is, among other things, a children's construction yard and adventure playground, a mud pit with water pump, a climbing path, a toboggan slope, a mini-golf course and a circular path with fitness equipment. Other green spaces in the neighborhood include Moabiter Stadtgarten, Unionpark Berlin and Kleiner Tiergarten. The most famous sights in the neighborhood are the Heilige-Geist-Kirche church on Perleberger Straße and the Güterbahnhof Moabit memorial. The Putlitzbrücke deportation memorial, designed by sculptor Volkmar Haase, is located on the Putlitzbrücke.
