Where is the Kaskelkiez? Why is the Graefekiez so popular? Which neighborhoods are great for families? A brief portrait of the most important "Kieze" in Berlin. more
The Samariterviertel, often referred to as the Samariterkiez or Nordkiez, is located in Friedrichshain. The old buildings from the Wilhelminian era are not only popular with families.
The Samariterkiez is a thoroughly renovated neighborhood of old buildings in the north-east of Friedrichshain, where families feel particularly at home. But everyone else will also find everything they need to live here.
The Kiez is located around the Samariterkirche church and Samariterstraße north of Frankfurter Allee. Where exactly the neighborhood begins and ends is - as so often - disputed. Most people draw the line at the old abattoir in Eldenauer Strasse (north), the Ringbahn (east), Frankfurter Allee (south) and Petersburger Strasse, Bersarinplatz and Thaerstrasse (west). For others, it already ends at Proskauer Straße.
In the Samariterkiez, there are many Wilhelminian-style houses that have long since been renovated and are listed buildings. Five residential storeys and converted attics are the standard here. In between are a few older, unadorned new buildings and brand new apartment blocks - quite a few of them with owner-occupied flats. The nearest playground is usually not far away. There is also a splash pad in the neighborhood, which is very popular with families. The urban, middle-class people who live here also like to go out in the Kiez. There are numerous cafés, bars and restaurants in the Samariterkiez. The neighborhood is quite tranquil. Rigaer Straße seems almost like an anomaly. It is still dominated by punks who live in the formerly squatted houses with their colorful facades.
The streets in the neighborhood are lined with trees and the public transport connections are very good thanks to the city center location. In addition to the good transport connections, there are also very good local amenities. Various supermarkets, discounters and small shops can be found in the Samariterviertel, as well as various service businesses. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, restaurants, everyday necessities, repairs - you don't have to walk far in the neighborhood. But the fact that everything is there and the flats are nice also has its price. To prevent further displacement of tenants in the Kiez, the Samariterviertel has been subject to milieu protection since the beginning of 2021. This means that rented flats may only be converted into owner-occupied flats under special conditions, and luxury renovations are prohibited.
Forckenbeckplatz is the only large green space in the Samariterviertel. The large, rectangular square has sunbathing lawns, a children's playground, an adventure playground, a splash pad, a basketball court and beautiful old deciduous trees. To the north is Blankensteinpark, which is currently being created on the site of the former abattoir on Eldenaer Straße. The metal frame of the Hammelauktionshalle was integrated into the park. Stadtpark Lichtenberg adjoins the Samariterkiez neighborhood to the east. There are no major sights in the Samariterviertel. Nevertheless, the Samariterkirche and the Art Nouveau façades of the houses in Bänschstraße are worth seeing. A footpath runs through the center, lined with trees, benches and flowers.
