Reuterkiez, also known as Reuterquartier or Kreuzkölln, is located in the north of Neukölln. The Gründerzeit neighbourhood is poor and rich, hip and rough at the same time.

The Reuterkiez is lively, colourful - and very, very hip. It has become a place of longing for the young and young-at-heart, expats, adventure-seekers and night owls. The people who come here are looking for a Berlin that is exciting, raw and authentic. The fact that this works to some extent, despite the huge influx of newcomers, is also due to the fact that the old Reuterkiez is still visible.

Location of the Reuterkiez in Neukölln

The Reuterkiez is located in the north of Neukölln, on the border with Kreuzberg. It takes its name from Reuterplatz. The Kiez is located in the center of the neighborhood and is named after the writer and poet Fritz Reuter. The Reuterkiez is bordered by Maybachufer, Kottbusser Damm, Sonnenallee, Wildenbruchstraße and Kiehlufer. Around 19,000 people live here on an area of around 70 hectares. This makes Kreuzkölln one of the most densely populated areas in Berlin.

Living in the Reuterkiez

The old buildings from the Wilhelminian era are characteristic of the Reuterkiez. These include not only the front buildings on the street, but also the many rear buildings and the courtyards. In the past, homes and workplaces were often close together. The small shops and workshops in houses and courtyards, the factory buildings and industrial yards in the neighborhood still bear witness to this today. People from very different cultures live in the flats. The neighborhood is quite young and a bit noisy. Not everyone here has a lot of money. Others, on the other hand, live in a spacious condominium on a temporary basis or party late into the night. Everyone who visits the north of Neukölln or decides to stay a little longer finds themselves in this area of tension.

Going out in Kreuzkölln and infrastructure

Kreuzkölln has been one of Berlin's favourite places to go out for a few years now. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés, bars and pubs here - especially in Weserstraße, Hobrechtstraße and Pannierstraße. You can choose between numerous cuisines from Italian to Mexican, between cheap beer and fine cocktails, pancakes and vegan patisserie. During the day, the Reuterkiez invites you to go shopping. The small shops offer everything that the big chains don't have in their range. Vintage fashion, vinyl records, toys, jewellery, natural cosmetics, kimonos - all this and more can be found here in shops that are often lovingly decorated and offer personal advice. Anyone looking for fabrics, yarns and sewing accessories will find what they are looking for at Neuköllner Stoff, a large fabric market on Maybachufer. The Türkenmarkt, a weekly market with fruit, vegetables, Turkish specialities and much more, takes place twice a week at the same location.

Urban greenery and places of interest

If you prefer something a little greener, take a stroll along the banks of the Landwehrkanal or go to Reuterplatz with its trees, playground and fountain. There is an allotment garden colony on Pannierstraße and Weichselplatz on Kiehlufer with tall trees, play areas for children and three ping-pong tables. Larger green spaces such as the Volkspark Hasenheide and the St. Jakobi churchyard are within walking distance. The latter is a listed garden monument.

Night-time peace also applies in the Reuterkiez

Whether in front of the bar, in front of the restaurant or on the way back to the hotel: In the Reuterkiez, as in the rest of Berlin, please be considerate of the residents after 10 pm and adjust your noise level accordingly.
