Neighborhoods
Where is the Kaskelkiez? Why is the Graefekiez so popular? Which neighborhoods are great for families? A brief portrait of the most important "Kieze" in Berlin. more
In the Kaskelkiez, also known as Victoriastadt, one renovated Wilhelminian-style building stands next to another - a tranquil, urban idyll directly behind Ostkreuz.
The Kaskelkiez is a neighborhood probably at its most magnificent in Pfarrstraße. Most of the Kiez's listed houses are located here, with pretty stucco façades and old farm buildings in the backyards. But in the rest of Victoriastadt, too, the idyll of a well-preserved Wilhelminian-style neighborhood that has been renovated in keeping with its listed status is hardly broken.
The lentil-shaped Kaskelkiez is located in the locality of Rummelsburg in the south-east of the borough of Lichtenberg. The neighborhood is named after Kaskelstraße, which in turn is named after the local politician Walter Kaskel. It runs roughly from east to west through the Kiez and is characterized by renovated Wilhelminian-style buildings. The boundaries of Victoriastadt are formed by railway tracks on all sides. Once at street level, they now lie on railway embankments. The Kaskelkiez is therefore mainly accessible via subways. Kaskelkiez is one of the smaller Kieze in Berlin: Only around 4,000 people live here. To the east of the Kaskelkiez is the Weitlingkiez.
More and more young families are living in Kaskelkiez. With the influx, the number of daycare centers and playgrounds in the neighborhood is also increasing - there are now whispers that Kaskelkiez is a bit like Prenzlauer Berg, only less crowded. The pavements are wide, with historic cobbled streets in between. Some of the courtyards still contain old sheds - some with workshops and small factories - and old trees that provide shade. Students, artists, creative types and long-time residents mingle with the families.
The fact that they like living here so much is not only due to the flats themselves, but also to the public transport connections, the restaurants and cafés and the proximity to water, greenery and Friedrichshain. Because, as they say, the Kaskelkiez is a bit like Friedrichshain - only quieter. Although there are plenty of places to eat and drink in Victoriastadt, the choice around Ostkreuz Station at the south-western tip of the neighborhood is much greater. People also tend to head west to party in the clubs and bars on the banks of the Spree.
Thanks to the street trees, leafy courtyards, the two small parks in Türrschmidtstraße and an allotment site, Victoriastadt is quite green. If you need more, walk to Rummelsburger Bucht with its waterfront promenade, benches and boat moorings, look out over the glistening water and watch excursion steamers, houseboats and water birds. The Treptower Park is then not far away.
In addition to the beautiful Wilhelminian-style buildings, the main sights worth seeing in the Kaskelkiez itself are Tuchollaplatz with its weekly market on Fridays and the Museum Lichtenberg, the Hartung Columns in Stadthaustraße, the Church of the Redeemer and the Shotball Tower, where seamless shotgun pellets used to be made. Although the tower stands a few metres outside the Kaskelkiez, it is still considered its landmark. The B.L.O.-Ateliers, which are located in the former Lichtenberg Ost railway depot on Nöldnerplatz, are still part of the neighborhood and are also very special. Artists and craftspeople not only work here, but also organize workshops, jam sessions and events.
