Neighborhoods
Where is the Kaskelkiez? Why is the Graefekiez so popular? Which neighborhoods are great for families? A brief portrait of the most important "Kieze" in Berlin. more
The Weitlingkiez in Lichtenberg is characterised in many places by apartment blocks from the Neues Bauen era. Young families are now discovering the neighborhood as a place to call home.
Most of the residents of Weitlingkiez live in old buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries that surround green courtyards. Many of them are still long-established residents, but there are also people from neighboring districts, students, young families and expats. It's no surprise that they come: The Kiez is close to the city center, quiet and still comparatively affordable.
The Kiez is named after Weitlingstraße in the center of the neighborhood and runs through the Lichtenberg districts of Rummelsburg and Friedrichsfelde. The educationalist Johann Ludwig Weitling was once a schoolmaster in the municipality of Lichtenberg. The approximately 14,000 inhabitants of Weitlingkiez live between the center of Friedrichsfelde, the railway line to Frankfurt/Oder, the Kaskelkiez and the tracks of the Ostbahn.
Quite a few of the Weitlingkiez residents live in the many houses that have been listed since the 1970s. The blocks of flats date from the Neues Bauen era, which is characterised by simple, cubic forms and unadorned façades. They are mainly located in Metastraße, Marie-Curie-Allee and Archibaldweg and bear names such as Sonnenhof, Erlenhof, Ulmenhof and Pappelhof. Another prominent example of Neues Bauen is the school designed by Max Taut on Nöldnerplatz, which is clad in yellow and red clinker bricks. In Lückstraße, colonists' houses dating from the end of the 18th century have been preserved and are also listed buildings. Many of the old houses have now been renovated and brownfield sites have been redeveloped.
The Weitlingkiez is considered quiet and green. Although the houses are predominantly plain, the courtyards are generously proportioned and usually display a variety of plants. Trees, shrubs and flower beds can be found here, often including play and sunbathing areas for young families. In addition to Nöldnerplatz, Münsterlandplatz is one of the well-known green spaces. There is also a playground here. You can walk along the Kraatz-Tränke-Graben and past allotment gardens from Weitlingkiez to Tierpark Friedrichsfelde, the largest landscape animal park in Europe with enclosures, old trees, wide footpaths, water features and an imposing castle.
Weitlingkiez is very well connected to the city center via the Rummelsburg, Nöldnerplatz and Lichtenberg train stations. There are good local amenities in the form of supermarkets, discount stores and small shops. There is a weekly market on Münsterlandplatz every Friday. There are daycare centers and schools, a few cafés and restaurants. The fact that students also find their place in Weitlingkiez is not least due to the fact that several universities are located in the area. Weitlingkiez is therefore a popular neighborhood for many reasons.
