Zoologischer Garten station was the most important traffic junction in the former West Berlin. However, it became known worldwide as a social hotspot.
The station of the same name is located directly opposite the Zoologischer Garten with its aquarium. Zoologischer Garten station was built in 1882 and was initially only used for light rail services, but later also for suburban and long-distance trains. In 1902, Zoo station was also given a subway station.
Berlin Zoologischer Garten station was rebuilt for the 1936 Summer Olympics and additional tracks were added. There were now separate halls for S-Bahn, local and long-distance trains. After the Second World War, it became the most important train station in West Berlin. After many years as an important regional and long-distance station, long-distance services at Bahnhof Zoo were discontinued for many years. The Berlin Senate's transport concept provided for the strengthening of other stations in Berlin. Today, some long-distance trains stop at Zoologischer Garten station again.
Bahnhof Zoo became sadly famous in the 1970s and 1980s as a meeting place for drug users and sex workers. The book "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" describes the true story of Christiane F. and the everyday life of the drug addicts who chose the back of the station as their meeting place.
