Visitors wait on the Drachenberg in front of the Radio Tower and TV Tower for the sunrise over Berlin.

The Radio Tower in Berlin-Charlottenburg is a Berlin landmark and offers a great view over Berlin from its observation deck.

Alongside the TV Tower, the Berliner Funkturm (Berlin Radio Tower) is another well-known transmission mast in Berlin. The tower is not only a pioneer in radio history, but also a popular attraction in Berlin with its viewing platform and restaurant. The Radio Tower at the exhibition grounds in Berlin-Charlottenburg attracts particular attention thanks to illuminations during events such as the Festival of Lights.

Steel pioneer in the history of radio

The Berlin Radio Tower was built between 1924 and 1926 as a transmission mast and is now a listed building. The steel lattice construction of the Berlin Radio Tower was designed by Heinrich Straumer and was erected on a footprint of just 20 by 20 meters.

The ceremonial opening took place on September 3, 1926 on the occasion of the third radio exhibition, and broadcasting began in September 1925. Just a few years later, the facilities on the radio tower broadcast the first, still soundless television pictures from the Witzleben television station over Berlin.

During the Second World War, a grenade destroyed one of the main struts and at times the Radio Tower stood on only three legs. The 600-ton colossus remained standing, was repaired and the restaurant reopened in 1950.

Restaurant and viewing platform

Today, the Funkturm has a total height of 150 meters (including antennas), the restaurant is located at a height of 55 meters and the viewing platform at 125 meters. Both can be reached quickly with an express elevator, and from the top you have a fantastic view over the exhibition grounds and City West. The Berlin Radio Tower is also still used as a transmission mast, but only for regional police and mobile communications.
