Employees of the fire department, police and judiciary in Berlin can apply for an exceptional parking permit if they have unfavorable working or deployment times.

"If their offices are located in parking management zones, financial burdens of a not inconsiderable amount would be added to the already existing physical burden of working and deployment times," said Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger (SPD) according to a press release on Thursday. This is no longer the case.

Regulation in force since end of December

According to the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport, the exceptional permit can have a maximum duration of two years and costs 60 euros. The regulation has been in force since December 24, 2023. Spranger said: "While Berlin sleeps and the operation of public transport is still restricted, our rescue and emergency services are on duty and have to get to their stations quickly." Especially service personnel who live in the outer areas of Berlin or in Brandenburg have few alternatives have to rely their cars.

Application necessary to obtain exemption permit

The exemption permit can be applied for at Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten. Employees of special services such as the Berlin police homicide squads, the emergency services of the Berlin justice system and volunteer fire departments can also apply for the special parking permit if their working hours are unfavorable.
