Datscha

Theater/Tanz/Musik, Deutsch, Festsaal, Ca. 1 h 40 Min.

Golda Barton´s adaptation of Gorky´s “Summer Guests” focuses on the intersectionality of class issues and feminism. Cathrin, Mardja, Julia and Kelly spend a weekend together at Leeta´s new dacha. They are all the first in their family to go to university, but they were unable to break through the “glass ceiling”. They look enviously at their husbands, who offer them financial security as heirs to German families. But where have their ideals gone?

Isabelle Redfern/MamaNoSing: Datscha

“If you have a good idea in IT, a really good one, then money will chase you!- And now look around you, you live like in a lifestyle magazine, but your ideals...”

Golda Barton slims down Gorky's socially critical work Summer Guests about social advancement, classism, lifestyles and discarded ideals and transports the protagonists to a summer retreat in the Berlin countryside in her modern rewrite. But how safe is this countryside for not white-passing women today? And why is the income gap between Leeta, Cathrin, Mardja, Julia and their husbands so wide? Is it just coincidence or is it because they themselves are the first in their families to go to university, while their husbands are white West German heirs? And why do Wolle and Kelly, with their unconventional lifestyle, seem so much happier than the academic women among them?

In sharp-tongued, witty, fast-paced dialogue, Barton takes the century-old play to the height of current discourse. Director Isabelle Redfern and choreographer Ute Pliestermann, together with live music by Anton Berman, lend the play dancing and performative entertaining qualities.
