Hamlet

Teatro La Plaza / Chela de Ferrari

With respectful disrespect, Teatro La Plaza from Peru rewrites Shakespeare's “Hamlet” and turns conventional wisdom on its head. Taking centre stage is not the Prince of Denmark but rather a group of eight performers with Down's syndrome, sharing their desires and disappointments with the audience. What meaning does “being” have for those who can hardly find a place where they are properly recognised? In the past, people with Down's syndrome were seen as a social burden, a problem. What purpose, what value does their existence have today, in a world where productivity and efficiency as well as unattainable ideals of consumption and beauty are seen as the paradigm of human life? A rich, surprising, upbeat, thought-provoking spectacle that celebrates community while also offering a manifesto of self-empowerment.
