British theater director Alexander Zeldin directs Beyond Caring at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. In his first directorial work in Germany, he shows the work of a cleaning crew in a meat factory in a semi-documentary form.

Beyond Caring

Beyond Caring

Three women and two men meet in the loading room of a meat factory. The night shift is about to start, they begin their work. The job: to clean the meat factory. They don't know each other yet. Different contracts bind them to their work: Michael is a permanent part-time employee, Sonja and Becky are employed as subcontractors through an outside company, and Ava comes through an employment office measure. Their foreman is Jan. Every night, for two weeks, there is a break every four hours. They eat together, leaf through magazines, chat. When it gets light, they go home or to the next job. That's how it goes day after day. And on and on. Until something changes, until some of these lonely people suddenly get too close, and way too fast.

Ruthlessly honest, yet warm-hearted and with laconic humor, Alexander Zeldin brings the stories of people from an invisible class to the stage in his play. In doing so, he seeks a new form of theatrical realism and focuses on the smallest details of life on stage in a system that extracts maximum profit from labor at any human cost.
