A new, late summer cultural event is casting its shadow ahead: on August 31, 2024, "Queens & Flowers", the drag summer festival in the green southwest of Berlin, will take place for the first time from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. In the open-air spaces around the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden, floral splendor and drag art will merge into a celebration of queer culture for all those who care about diversity. The focus of "Queens & Flowers" is on drag culture, which is now also celebrated outside the LGBTIQ* community. This focus not only offers first-class entertainment, but also makes a socio-political statement. The district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and the Berlin Botanical Garden are taking a clear stance on diversity, acceptance and variety. "Diversity enriches life - this applies to the world of plants just as much as it does to ours.
The Drag Summer Festival brings a program around diversity topics to the Botanical Garden Berlin
We are happy to host this event with conviction," says Thomas Borsch, Director of the Berlin Botanical Garden. "I am delighted that this wonderful event is taking place in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. Events like this can make a significant contribution to strengthening the coexistence and understanding of everyone for and with each other," explains District Mayor Maren Schellenberg (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen). Visitors can look forward to a varied program - with family activities in the afternoon, guided tours of the greenhouses and various show and music acts in the middle of the garden: Schwuz DJ Gitti Reinhardt will provide relaxed beats on the terrace by the large tropical house, while there will be a drag queen reading hour and workshops for kids on painting with plant paints. Two top-class drag shows and a concert by singer Jade Pearl Baker on the stage at the Liegerasen invite you to enjoy drag art in the summer garden. Food trucks and an open-air cocktail lounge will be available for your physical well-being. Guides from the Botanical Gardens will give tours of the most popular greenhouses and talk about cacti, cocoa trees and tropical flowers.
