“How can we reclaim pink, reclaim femininity, redefine femininity for ourselves?
A movement research through (re)presentations of womxn in everyday life and social media, and the relation of this to physical mannerisms, expectations in behavior and conduct, clothing, and (dis/)appearance. It started off with a realization: we hated pink!
Because it was an assumed ‘girly’ colour, because it’s associated with sweetness, weakness, softness, and obedience. And so in our naivety, we instinctively ‘rebelled’, thinking that somehow by being subversive, by rejecting pink, rejecting ‘being feminine’, we could distance ourselves from the expectations, judgments, and discrimination of women.
The presentation of women in the history of art has often further perpetuated these ideas of what women should be/are allowed to be, and the under-representation of women artists in art history even now is discouraging. These expectations from others are then internalized by us and eventually also become what we demand of ourselves, sometimes losing sight of our true desires. How can we shed these expectations and discover our core selves?
Outside of our experiences, we are also interested in collecting the perspectives, stories, and thoughts of other womxn. This would be a part of our research: to observe womxn bodies and their movements as an archive of this learned information. What is our learned and maybe by now instinctive way of moving and arranging our bodies and faces? To appear and disappear, to make others notice us enough but not too much? How do we react or rebel? What kind of thoughts or intentions are behind these movements and what is the quality or feeling of these movements?” (SueKi Yee & Giorgia Bovo)
"reinkommen" ("coming in") is ada Studio's latest performance series. It gives young choreographers the opportunity to open their work process, invite the audience to come in and to get into conversation.
